HTA – What is it and why is it important? - Katharina Biester
3:15 PM - 3:45 PM
The Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) is Germany’s health technology assessment (HTA) agency. It examines the benefits and harms of medical interventions for patients. IQWiG’s assessments provide evidence-based information to decision-makers in the German health care system. The Federal Joint Committee (G-BA), the main decision-making body in the German health care system, commissions IQWiG to evaluate dossiers submitted by pharmaceutical companies within the framework of early benefit assessments of drugs. These assessments are used to inform patients and physicians about the benefit of new drugs and form the basis of pricing negotiations. The session explains what HTA is, why HTA is needed and where it is located in the post-approval decision-making process, using Germany’s Health Care System as an example.
